Makeup Tips from My Favorite YouTubers
I love LOVE love watching YouTube videos. One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday morning (or night or afternoon) is to binge watch all of my favorite beauty YouTubers. Some I watch just for the entertainment factor, but some are pro makeup artists (or really close) who have some damn good makeup tips. I've learned a few helpful makeup tips and tricks so I thought I'd share:
Makeup Tip #1: Do your under eye concealer on both eyes at the same time.
When I heard this I was like, wait, so I've been doing it wrong the whole time? I was watching Alyssa Ashley and she pointed out that when you do concealer on one eye and then the other, the second eye often ends up with more concealer. This happens because your brush or sponge is picking up product from the first eye and depositing that onto the second eye. I'd actually noticed this before but hadn't really thought about why it was happening. So, now I'm trying to train myself to bounce back and forth between each eye while I do my concealer. It's a small adjustment, but I hope it'll make a difference in how my makeup looks.
Makeup Tip #2: Use Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist as a glowy makeup primer.
So if you're a longtime reader of this blog, then you know I used to damn near bathe in the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. I used to spray it all over my face after doing my makeup to get that glowy look. But then my skin changed (thanks hormones) and the Tatcha spray just didn't do the trick over my makeup. So I placed it on a shelf and would look at it longingly every once and a while. All that changed when I watched a video from Mariah Leonard. She sprayed a few pumps onto her hand and then pressed it into her face as the last step before applying makeup. Of course I had to try it and it works! I use it under my more matte foundations, like Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Foundation or Fenty Beauty Pro Filter Soft Matte Foundation, and it adds just the right amount of moisture and glow, but in a very natural way. It soaks into the skin so it doesn't feel heavy, and foundation glides right over it too. Try this trick if you need a little more moisture under your makeup.
Makeup Tip #3: Let your concealer sit for a few minutes under your eyes for extra coverage.
I got this makeup tip from my girl Jackie Aina and she always lets her under eye concealer sit for a few minutes (usually while she does her eyebrows) before she blends it out. She says this makes the concealer stay in place longer and provides more coverage, and she's right. If you want to make sure your concealer really covers those under eye circles, let it sit for a few minutes before you blend it out.
Makeup Tip #4: Use a large powder brush after doing your makeup to seamlessly blend.
This tip comes from Melissa Alatorree. Now, this is the tip that made me hit the subscribe button. After Melissa does all her makeup, she'll take a big ol' powder brush and lightly pass it over her face. Key word = lightly. This small step makes such a big difference. It makes everything look so seamless and gives you an almost airbrushed finish.
Makeup Tip #5: Use eyeliner as an eyeshadow base.
Technically, this tip doesn't come from a YouTuber, but it does come from a pro makeup artist, so I think it still counts. Mali Magic is my current IG obsession. I LOVE watching her IG live tutorials (and may or may not have snuck off to the bathroom to watch them during work). She creates the most stunning looks that are somehow wearable but impactful and editorial at the same time. Anyways, she never uses traditional eyeshadow bases (like this one from Benefit that I often use). Instead she uses an eyeshadow pencil in a shade similar to the eyeshadow as a base. This makes the eyeshadow last longer and also intensifies the color of the eyeshadow. I tried this trick over the weekend and it works! While you're checking out these videos, make sure you take a few seconds to subscribe to my YouTube channel.Let me know if you've tried any of these tips, or if you have any to share.
