Mexico City Travel Guide | What to Do, See & EAT
If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know that I went to Mexico City a couple of weeks ago. Two of my friends from law school were celebrating their birthdays and I tagged along :-)Mexico City is a huge city, so we barely scratched the surface on our 4 day trip. That being said, I think we got a nice taste of what the city has to offer, so I'm going to share where we went and what I'd do if I went again. [Side note: I am definitely going to visit again! I just loved it.]
day 1 in mexico city
I took a redeye Thursday night, so I arrived in Mexico City around 5am on Friday morning. I knew I'd have a few hours to kill before my friends would get into town. I also knew that I'd have a few hours to kill before I'd be able to check into my hotel room. Luckily, we were staying at the W Hotel and they were soo accommodating. I had a delicious breakfast at the J by Jose Andres Restaurant and then showered and changed at the spa. Next, I took a short walk to the National Museum of Anthropology, which was incredible.I loved seeing the artifacts from all the different indigenous groups of Mexico. Plus, the exhibit on the Aztec was incredible.
later that night...
You might be able to say that the sole reason that we went to Mexico City was to eat at Pujol. It is the number 1 restaurant in the city and we had reservations for their 6 course tasting menu. The food was incredible and the decor and service were just amazing. I absolutely LOVE Mexican food. It's probably the one type of food that I could eat every day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No lie. But, I know that lots of people think Mexican food is just tacos, but it's not. And here's proof...[row padding_top="" padding_bottom="" bg="" bg_light="true" appear="false"] [column size="1-2" appear="false"][/column] [column size="1-2" appear="false"][/column] [/row]These were two of my favorite dishes at Pujol and they were insane. My friend booked reservations months in advance, so if you're planning a trip to Mexico City, definitely try to snag a table here. Then, after Pujol, we grabbed drinks at this super chic restaurant - Gin Gin.The food and drinks were delicious (yes, we ordered more food here!), and the service was super helpful too. But the decor was soo cool. They had this pre-historic / flinstones theme going on and somehow, it looked chic and not corny. My favorite thing was this DJ booth that had these mini dinosaurs covering the entire surface.
day 2 in Mexico City
Another one of my friends found out about a street food tour, so that's what we did all morning on Saturday. Honestly, at first I wasn't that excited about it. I didn't want to be traipsing around Mexico City on a group tour. But DAMN, the food was soo good. The guide was really knowledgeable and the group was only 8 or so people. It was so nice to taste all kinds of different food and just get a feel for the downtown area.In addition to trying quesadillas and several tacos, we stopped at a chef's market. We saw all kinds of basic and exotic ingredients. From spices, meats and seafood to rare mushrooms, ants and crickets (delicacies in Mexico City! We tasted them and they just tasted salty). One of my favorite things was this taco with green chorizo, carne asadaand FRENCH FRIES (or papas fritas). It was heavenly. After the food tour, we went to the Bazar Sabado, which is a really nice arts & crafts market in San Angel. San Angel is a stunning neighborhood with picturesque cobblestone streets and beautiful Spanish style homes. Our next stop was the Diego Rivera Studio (which is prominently featured in Frida)...
day 3 in mexico city
As you can probably imagine, by day 3, we were slowing down a bit. We decided to hang out in the Roma Norte neighborhood, which was also super cute. We ate at Lalo and then walked over to Panderia Rosetta (the guava and cheese roll was incredible!!).Later that afternoon we went back to the area near our hotel (Polanco) and just found a cute cafe and ordered drinks. If I could have done one thing differently, it would have been to plan for Sunday night dinner. Most of the restaurants close, so we kind of struggled to find dinner.
day 4 in mexico city
Our last day was Monday and we were all leaving at different times. We had a really nice breakfast (with some of the best hot chocolate) at a restaurant close to our hotel - El Bajio. The service was great and the food was really good too.If you couldn't tell already, I loved Mexico City. I didn't get a chance to see the pyramids outside of the city, or to really explore all of the trendy neighborhoods (I'd like to check out Condesa and Roma Norte more), so I feel like I'm justified in planning a return trip soon.
