What to Mix with a Clay Mask

I've mentioned clay masks a couple of times before, so I wanted to come back and share some tips on what to mix with a clay mask.First, let me explain the difference between the 2 main types of clay masks.  There are the kind that already have the liquid mixed in, so they're like a paste.  This Caudalie one is one of my favorites (reviewed here).  There's another type of clay mask, and it comes in a powder form.  With these, it's up to you to decide what to mix with it.what to mix with a clay maskSecond, I want to explain how clay masks work.  There are different types of clay masks and of course the addition of different ingredients affects how it'll work.  But, most clay masks work to purify the skin.  Basically as the clay mixture dries on your face, it draws out impurities and clears your pores.I love using clay masks to clear out congested areas, like on my nose and cheeks, and try to do a clay mask once a week.  The problem is that sometimes they can be really drying.  Luckily I've found a few different things to mix with a clay mask that'll not only reduce dryness but will boost the benefits of the mask.

Option 1: Rosewater

Rosewater is a great choice to mix with clay masks because it's anti-inflammatory and reduces redness.  So if you're using a clay mask aimed at treating acne (like this bentonite one), redness is probably an issue too.  So using rosewater is a really good idea.  Another bonus - rosewater has anti-bacterial properties, so again, it's going to help with breakouts.  One of my favorite options for rosewater is the Mario Badescu Facial Spray.

Option 2: Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is known for its healing properties.  When it's mixed with a clay mask it'll help counteract that active ingredients in the mask.  Like I said, sometimes clay masks can be drying because they're literally pulling gunk out of your skin (gross I know).  Using aloe vera gel will calm and soothe your skin.  I recommend this option if you have sensitive skin.

Option 3: Rosehip Oil

Who was waiting for me to give the oil option? Now that it's legit feeling like fall, I'm putting all the oils onto my face.  For one, rosehip oil is super moisturizing.  Also, it has lots of anti-oxidants, meaning it has both anti-aging and pollution fighting properties.  Right now, this oil has been my go-to.Are you into clay masks?  Let me know what you've been mixing with yours lately in the comments.
