I swear the 90s have totally taken over fashion and beauty. I’m loving all things 90s – chokers, flannels, turtlenecks AND brown lipstick. Brown lipstick just screams 1996 to me, but the key is to make the rest of your makeup look modern. I like to add a healthy dose of glow (obviously) to give a little wink to the 90s but to definitely stay in 2016.[cta btn_text=”Subscribe To My YouTube Channel” btn_url=”https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtYKxLzGXw0Mvn5KlS9ViGQ” bg=”” bg_light=”true” appear=”false”][/cta]
Even though I love brown lipstick, I definitely don’t want to look like I’m two decades behind the times. So, for this fall makeup tutorial, I used a really natural looking foundation and added some metallic eyeshadow. For blush, I used one of my favorite everyday blushes (MAC Sweet As Cocoa) because it’s just so natural and pretty on brown skin. Then, I added one of my favorite highlighters – Laura Mercier Seduction.
Here are all the details for my makeup look:
MAC Paint Pot in Constructivist
MAC Eyeshadow in Bronze
Chanel Le Rouge Collection Illusion D’ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Rouge Brule
Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil* in 5
Maybelline Colossal Spider Effect Mascara
Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer in Gingersnap
MAC Prep + Prime CC Colour Correcting Loose Powder in Neutralize
MAC Blush in Sweet As Cocoa
Laura Mercier Face Illuminator in Seduction
Lena Lashes Liquid Lipstick in Orlando
about that brown lipstick…
As I mentioned in the tutorial, I actually have several shades of brown lipstick. I decided to post some swatches here just so that you guys can see
that I’m obsessed how many options there are.
First up, I have swatches of liquid lipsticks:
In the tutorial, I wore Lena Lashes Orlando and it’s a true brown lipstick. It dries super matte and is easy to apply, but it can be drying. Colourpop has two really pretty brown lipsticks too – Kae and Limbo. Kae is another true brown lipstick and Limbo is a very dark brown, almost black.
Next, I have swatches of traditional lipsticks:
I think Photo is the first brown lipstick that I bought and that kicked off my obsession LOL. It looks very similar to Orlando, but it’s way more comfortable since it’s a regular lipstick. Toast and Butter is part of MAC’s “Liptensity” launch of highly pigmented lipsticks, and I have to say it is BOMB. It’s super pigmented but glides onto the lips so easily. If you’re looking for a new lipstick, I suggest you check out that formula.
Colourpop’s Taurus is another really pretty brown lipstick. It has more of a red undertone then the other brown lipsticks that I have, so it was a totally justified purchase.
Last, I have a brown lipgloss and a metallic liquid lipstick:
So you guys already saw Zebra in action in my Colourpop swatch video, and I probably mentioned this Anastasia Beverly Hills lipgloss in the past. But, I think these are both fun ways to get in on the brown lipstick trend in a different way. Sepia is a perfect everyday gloss because it’s so rich and opaque. And Zebra is just fun. The metallic finish is another reminder of the 90s and I’m here for it.
After I finished the tutorial, I thought it would be fun to top off the brown lipstick with this rich, metallic gloss (Cheat Code by Colourpop). It totally changed up the look and made it much more intense.
I hope you guys enjoy the tutorial! I have the video posted up top, but just in case, here’s a link to the brown lipstick makeup tutorial.
